Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare a 9x13-inch baking pan by lining it with parchment paper or greasing it with butter.
  • In a mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and salt. Set aside.

Mixing

  • In another mixing bowl, cream the unsalted butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar together until light and fluffy (about 4 to 5 minutes).
  • Add the eggs one at a time, mixing thoroughly after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  • Alternate adding the dry ingredients and the unsweetened applesauce into the creamed mixture, starting and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix gently but thoroughly.
  • Fold in the chopped apples gently to ensure they are evenly distributed.

Baking

  • Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan, spreading it evenly.
  • Sprinkle the topping of cinnamon and granulated sugar over the batter.
  • Bake for approximately 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Allow the cake to cool completely in the pan on a wire rack before slicing and serving.

Notes
